Pellets

Today, there are many different types of fuel that heat all kinds of buildings. The growing level of air pollution has become the reason why farms began to move away from the so-called black-smoke-belching stoves. They are classless stoves that produce a lot of harmful substances and emit them into the atmosphere. Last years, they have been replaced with more efficient and ecological solutions. One of the most popular is wood pellets, which we will describe here. Our store’s offer includes only the highest quality pellets, which means that it is efficient and environmentally friendly fuel.

What is pellet?

Pellets are solid fuels that take the form of granules. It is obtained from biomass – in this case it’s wood waste, plants grown for this purpose, but also by-products of agriculture. The production process uses sawdust produced during sawmill work, which is compressed, and the resulting mass is squeezed through a matrix with holes. As a result, granules are formed, the diameter of which does not exceed 8 mm. This product, after passing through the matrix as a result of friction, gains a temperature of up to 70°C. Therefore, it’s placed in a special cooler so they lose this temperature. Later, the cooled granules are bagged. Most often there are used 15-kilogram bags, but there are also so-called BigBags that can hold up to a ton of pellets.

Pellets – production and types

Various types of wood are used to produce pellets. The easiest way to get pellets is from conifers, which contain more lignin than deciduous trees. Hard wood is more difficult to compress, but it has a higher heat of combustion and a higher bulk density. It is also important that the newly created product does not contain too much water. According to EU standards, it should contain a maximum of 10% of water, and additionally, it should be dense and produce a very small amount of ash.

Not only wood pellets are available on the market. Another interesting type of this fuel is straw pellets. It has excellent properties and parameters, and the material used for its production is simply crop residues, e.g. cereals, energy crops and rape. This thing practically does not produce dust, which is its great advantage. Another product in this category is sunflower pellets, the content of which – as the name suggests – is dry sunflower husk. This material has excellent energy parameters. Sunflower pellets are clean fuel, free from harmful substances. Like wood pellets, these products emit trace amounts of ash during combustion and generate similar amounts of heat.

Wood pellets – application

Heating a house, farms, power plants or heating plants are the main uses of pellets. For this, you need to buy a suitable stove. Experts usually recommend automated boilers that can self-ignite and dose the right amount of fuel themselves, thanks to providing the right amount of heat. When choosing a stove, it is worth paying special attention to its efficiency – it should be able to handle quite calorific pellets. It’s the calorific value of pellets that is one of the most important features of this fuel – to be certified, this parameter should be at least 16.5 MJ per kg. Each pellet stove manufacturer should also make sure that it is able to cope with even poorer quality fuel. It has been proven that pellets are very environmentally friendly – for one ton of fuel, it produces only less than 5 kilograms of ash, and also emits a very small amount of nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide. The ash resulting from the combustion of pellets is used, inter alia, in fertilizing the soil.

Wood pellets can also be used in the so-called gas generators and as cat litter (as a substitute for classic cat litter). Overall, pellets are safe for animals, and additionally they give off a pleasant smell of wood and absorb moisture better than wooden gravel.

How much do pellets cost?

The price of pellets is extremely flexible and can change even every few days. Currently, because the era of the energy crisis was caused by the war in Ukraine, the prices of all kinds of fuel for heating a home have soared. Even at the end of 2021, you didn’t have to pay even a thousand PLN for a ton of pellets. Currently, however, the price is extremely high – there is no chance that we’ll get 1000 kilos for less than PLN 2600. The reason for this isn’t only connected to the problem of the war in Ukraine. Other reasons are: dynamically rising raw material prices, the sales policy of the National Forests and problems with the export of roundwood. The drastic increase in fuel prices prompted the Polish authorities to introduce changes. Thanks to them, they will reduce the impact of the previously described phenomena on Poles’ wallets. Act on co-financing for farms using various forms of heating adopted in September 2022 is there to help. The largest allowance is to be obtained by pellet-burning farms – they will receive PLN 3,000 at a time.

How much does a pellet boiler cost?

The pellet stove costs its money too – and this price has also increased sharply in recent months. The boiler itself usually costs over PLN 10,000. With the complete preparation of the pellet heating system, this price increases even more. However, you can apply for funding for this investment. Merit in this Clean Air program, which can allocate up to PLN 79,000 per farm for this purpose. You can find all the information you need on the website of this program.
